Photo Ideas for Long-Distance Friends, Hour by Hour

Keeping up with someone in another city usually collapses into a status update: a message every few days summarising things that already happened. What you lose is the texture - what their street looks like on a Tuesday, what they actually eat, what time their light goes off.

These twelve prompts are written to be shot in parallel. Both of you answer the same prompt in the same hour, from wherever you are, and the video puts the two versions side by side. It works best when neither day is special.

The shot list

  1. 1

    The view from your window

Whatever is out there right now. No walking to a better window.

  2. 2

    What you are drinking

In your hand, in your kitchen, in your mug.

  3. 3

    Your street

Step outside your door and shoot straight ahead.

  4. 4

Where you spend the most hours

    Desk, car, workshop, ward. Unstaged.

  5. 5

    Someone you see every day

A colleague, a flatmate, a dog. Ask first.

  6. 6

    Lunch

Exactly as it is. This is the prompt where the two cities look most different.

  7. 7

    The weather

Straight up at the sky. No filter.

  8. 8

A shop you go to often

From outside. The ordinary one, not the nice one.

  9. 9

    Your route home

Whatever it looks like - platform, road, staircase.

  10. 10

    Dinner, honestly

Nobody is impressed by either of these. That is fine.

  11. 11

The room you are in tonight

    Wide. Include the mess.

  12. 12

    Last thing you see

Ceiling, lamp, window. Then put it down.

Three things worth knowing

Run this list as a Sway

Set it to 12 hours, invite the people you are with, and everyone gets one photo per hour. When it ends, the whole thing becomes a single split-screen video.
