The 24-Hour Photo Challenge, Hour by Hour
An ordinary day is the hardest thing to photograph, because nothing in it announces itself. The trick is to remove the decision: the hour arrives, you shoot whatever is in front of you, and you move on. What comes back at the end is not a highlight reel - it is the shape of a day you would otherwise have forgotten by Thursday.
Below is a prompt for each of the 24 hours. They are deliberately mundane. Run it with two or three friends on the same day and the interest is not in any single frame but in the gaps between them: four people, same hour, four completely different rooms.
Suggested Sway setup
- Length
- 24 hours ยท 24 photos
- Start it
- Midnight, or whenever you normally wake - just start on the hour.
- Mode
- Upload to unlock
Upload-to-unlock is worth it here. Seeing someone else's 3 a.m. before you have taken your own quietly changes what you shoot.
The shot list
- 1
The first thing you see
Whatever is in front of your eyes in the first ten seconds. Do not sit up first.
- 2
The alarm, or the dark
Your screen, your ceiling, or your window. One frame, no lights on.
- 3
The room, unmade
Shoot the bed exactly as you left it. Nobody is allowed to straighten anything.
- 4
Water
The tap, the kettle, the glass, the shower. Whatever water you touch first.
- 5
Your feet
Wherever they are standing right now. Floor included.
- 6
The first thing you ate
Mid-bite is better than plated. A wrapper counts.
- 7
Out the nearest window
Not the nicest window. The nearest one.
- 8
What you carry
Bag, pockets, hands - shoot what left the house with you.
- 9
Where you are working
The desk, the counter, the van, the ward. Wide enough to show the mess.
- 10
A stranger's back
Anyone ahead of you in a queue, on a platform, across a room.
- 11
Something you touched a hundred times
A handle, a keyboard, a steering wheel. Close.
- 12
Lunch, honestly
Whatever it actually was. No rearranging.
- 13
The ceiling above you
Straight up from wherever you are sitting.
- 14
A screen you did not choose
A TV in a shop, a departure board, someone else's monitor.
- 15
Your hands
Doing whatever they are doing. Hold still for one frame.
- 16
The light right now
Shoot the light itself - a patch on a wall, a lamp, a reflection.
- 17
The way home
The door, the road, the platform, the last turn.
- 18
Who is here
Whoever you are with. If nobody, shoot the empty chair.
- 19
Dinner, before anyone eats
One frame, then put the phone down for the rest of the meal.
- 20
The evening's noise
TV, laptop, guitar, dishwasher - whatever is making the sound.
- 21
Something you did not do today
The unread book, the unopened box, the untouched running shoes.
- 22
The bathroom mirror
As you are. This is not the hour for a good angle.
- 23
The last room with a light on
Shoot it from the doorway before you switch it off.
- 24
The dark
Phone up, one frame, whatever comes out. Then sleep.
Three things worth knowing
- The prompt matters less than the hour. A missed slot is more visible in the final video than a boring photo, so shoot the boring photo.
- Agree on a start hour before you begin - a Sway is read in one timezone, and a friend starting three hours late will not line up with you.
- Twenty-four hours is the longest a Sway runs. If a full day is too much for a first attempt, start with the beach or birthday list and work up.
Run this list as a Sway
Set it to 24 hours, invite the people you are with, and everyone gets one photo per hour. When it ends, the whole thing becomes a single split-screen video.
