Road Trip Photo Ideas, Hour by Hour

Road trip photos fail in a predictable way: forty near-identical shots of the same stretch of motorway, taken in the first ninety minutes, and then nothing until you arrive. The good material is in the middle - the fuel stops, the argument about the playlist, the person asleep with their mouth open.

This list spreads twelve prompts across twelve hours so the boring middle gets documented too. Give it to everyone in the car, not just whoever usually takes the photos: four angles of the same back seat is the whole point.

Everyone sees every photo

Leave it open. Half the fun is the driver seeing what the back seat just posted while it is still happening.

The shot list

  1. 1

    The packed trunk

Shoot it closed-lid-down before anyone rearranges. It will never look this organised again.

  2. 2

    Driver, first mile

From the passenger seat, eye level, no warning given.

  3. 3

    Whatever is playing

The screen with the track on it, road blurred behind.

  4. 4

    First fuel stop

Everyone out, backs to the pumps. Count how many are already barefoot.

  5. 5

    Snack inventory

Everything left, laid out on the dashboard or the bonnet.

  6. 6

    The first one asleep

Whoever went first. Do not wake them, do not fix their hair.

  7. 7

A sign you did not plan for

Any place name none of you can pronounce.

  8. 8

    Out the window at speed

Arm out, phone level, one frame only. No retries.

  9. 9

    The halfway meal

Whatever it is, wherever it is. A petrol station floor counts.

  10. 10

    Everybody out

One frame with all four doors open and nobody in the car.

  11. 11

    Sun on the windscreen

Shoot into the light through the glass - bugs, smears and all.

  12. 12

    Arrival, bags still in hand

The doorway of wherever you landed, before anyone unpacks.

Three things worth knowing

Run this list as a Sway

Set it to 12 hours, invite the people you are with, and everyone gets one photo per hour. When it ends, the whole thing becomes a single split-screen video.
